Catanzaro

Catanzaro is the location of the Seat of the Giunta of the Region Calabria. Situated in a dominant position at the centre of Calabria, looking out on the Ionian Sea, but connected by a fast road with the plain of Lamezia. Therefore ideally connected to important forms of communication such as the International Airport of Lamezia, motorway (A1) and railway lines.

The city is set on a rocky spur bordered by two deep torrents of Fiumarella and Musofalo. Along the Corso Mazzini is a myriad of small streets that run off each other, full of picturesque glimpses of houses, flights of steps, huts, little gardens, small shops and squares. An important medieval town (due to its School of Silk Weaving) alhough very little remains, due to the disastrous earthquake of 1783. Some historical buildings can be still seen in the city centre such as the Norman Castle, the Church of S. Omobono (13th C. now deconsecrated). Here is also the Provincial Museum and Library holding many important collections.

Catanzaro, being central, is an ideal base to travel around Calabria. One can take it in turns to visit the provinces, that are easily reached and visited in a day. (Cosenza and province,Vibo Valentia and province, Reggio Calabria and province, Crotone and province. The Sila and many pretty coastal towns are also on its doorstep.
