Copanello

Copanello is located 6 kilometres from Catanzaro and is one of the most celebrated bathing resorts of the Province of Catanzaro and comes under the municipality of Stalettì. In the ancient times Copanello has had an important touristic development, due to the beauty of the rocky cape on which it stands. A well equipped beach resort, it contains the remains of the small basilica of San Martino with its tree apses. In the small chapel is the sarcophagus of Cassiodorus, the founder of the monastery to which the church belonged. It’s a monolithic tomb decorated with bas relief and the inscibed cover is in the Museo civico of Catanzaro

Very suggestive are the vats of Cassiodorus, three natural bodies of water that the monks used for phsychi-culture. The coast in this area presents fascinating stretches of sandy beaches that alternate with cliffs and, up to the present day, the area still has been oriented towards high class tourism. The cliffs contains various grottos (San Gregorio) , the church of Santa Maria Vetere founded also by Cassiodorus which presents an exterior that contain Romanesque and Gothic elements.

In this area and in the nearby ones, such as Soverato ( the best known resort), Pietragrande and Caminia, there many restaurants, pubs, night-club, holiday villages, shops, camping sites and beach establishments that draws many tourists. The Libero Gatti Naturalistic museum with acquarium, botanical gardens and fossil collection is open to the public and is very interesting to visit.
